Will Chelsea give Juve the blues?

Chelsea go into their second leg match with Juventus in Italy with the slenderest of leads after their 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge. A Didier Drogba goal was enough to settle the match at the Bridge, but Chelsea may well be more reliant on their defenders for this second leg rather than their strikers.

Juventus showed enough in the first match to prove they will be dangerous opponents at home and Chelsea will need to be at their very best if they are to have any chance of qualifying. Juventus have won 10 of their last 13 Champions League matches at home and with such an impressive record the 6/4 (PaddyPower) on offer is a decent price.

Chelsea haven’t won an away match in the competition in their last seven attempts, two draws being the best they could muster. Goals have been in short supply away from home as well with no more than one being scored by Chelsea in those seven games.

They haven’t managed to win the second leg of a knockout game in the Champions League after winning the first leg either, so the odds looked stacked against them. With those stats in mind a win for Chelsea 7/4 (Partybets) looks unlikely and at a pretty short price we wouldn’t recommend betting on Chelsea to beat Juventus.

Even with such a poor away record it’s not all bad news for Chelsea. Juventus have never managed to win a knockout match against English opposition and have failed to score in their last three home games against English opposition.

It looks as if this will be a pretty close run thing and we think the game may well end up all square and so we’re tipping a draw 2/1 (Coral) to be the outcome. Our correct score prediction is 0-0 at odds of 6/1 (William Hill).

Beginners advice: Betting the Draw

Most people’s first bets in sports start by choosing a winner or a loser. In addition, in sports other than soccer, it can be normal to bet the line by picking how much a time will win by or how much a team will lose by.

When betting on soccer, most people use the same strategies thinking they can just bet on a winner to make money. However, there are plenty of ways to bet on soccer that are often overlooked by the common fan. A trick many professional bettors take is to bet the draw. This technique can win you a lot of money and help you learn how to bet the draw more effectively.

Being able to back the draw is not as difficult as you might think. Most fans don’t think of betting the draw because it does not have the majesty of picking right the winner or loser. The draw does not get the blood boiling and the emotion going as does a win or a loss. But think about how a professional bettor operates. They know what they are doing and think beyond the base adrenalin of picking the winner or loser. Instead, they choose to place the draw into the equation to make lots more money.

The odds for the draw, when betting on soccer, are usually the second best bet after betting on the favorite. With the high frequency of matches ending in draw you actually have a high likelihood of winning the bet. Thinking even further, when betting the draw you can lower the risk and get a higher level of reward. Sometimes, you'll find that the draw is the most likely thing to happen instead of a winner and the odds will never be short in this instance.

Another tactic is to bet against there being a draw. In a casual setting, such as with friends rather than at the bookies, you can find people like to take this line. Can Spurs peform a miracle?

Spurs were outsiders last season before they beat Chelsea in the final, and they are available at 4/1 (Partybets) with bookmakers to retain the trophy. Spurs overcame the odds last season, but can they do it again?

Going into last season’s final, Tottenham were playing far better than they are at present. They look a team lacking in confidence and look vulnerable at the back and we can’t see them pulling off another shock on Sunday.

On current form, it’s hard to see anything other than a comfortable United win. Spurs haven’t won any of their last four meetings with United, but there is semblance of hope if you’re thinking of backing Spurs, as they have won the last three times the teams have met in this competition.

We expect United to win comfortably even with Spurs having had all their best results in cup competitions this season. The correct score bets of 3-0 10/1 (Partybets) and 4-0 at a best priced 40/1 (Ladbrokes) are two bets we think are worth considering.

NO CHANCE THAT KAKA WILL GO TO CITY......IS THERE?

Managers are often complaining about the transfer window but I love it and I think most football fans would agree. It's always fun to see all the rumours in the papers, most of which turn out to be untrue and some of which are absolutely ridiculous. I've been excited about this transfer window since the day Manchester City got taken over by ADUG and showed their intent to splash the cash by signing Robinho, outbidding Chelsea in the process. They achieved that all in one day, now they have a full month to throw their money around. I was a bit disappointed to begin with as they were only linked with players like Craig Bellamy (no offence Craig but you're not exactly a marquee signing). But finally things have got interesting and City have made an audacious bid to sign Kaka, agreeing a fee reported to be over £100million with AC Milan. The only problem now is convincing him to come. City are hoping a wage of £500,000 a week will do the trick but I'd be very surprised if he goes. Let's be honest, he's not doing too badly for himself financially at Milan and it's clear from his quotes this week about wanting to grow old there that he loves the club. He's well known for his strong religious faith which would suggest he is motivated by more than just money. He has stuck with Milan through some difficult recent times such as the match fixing scandal and their failure to qualify for this season's Champions League. City might be ambitious but they probably won't even be in Europe next season whereas Milan are once again challenging near the top of Serie A so why would he want to leave? Then again, who could turn down £500,000 a week. Just to add, I can't go along with those who seem to think Kaka moving for such a huge fee will be the end of the game as we know it. It was only a few years ago that Chelsea got rich and the death of the game was predicted then too. Although they have been pretty successful they haven't won the league in the last two years and haven't won the Champions League. Even if City have all the money in the world they can still only put eleven players on the pitch so there is no guarantee they will become the dominant force.

TIME TO START TAKING LIVERPOOL SERIOUSLY

I'll be honest, I don't think Liverpool will win the league this season and I've never really believed they'd come close. We've seen them make decent starts to the season before in the last few years but they've always come unstuck. In the past they've been too reliant on Steven Gerrard, have made too many medicore signings and seen manager Rafa Benitez focus on the Champions League and chop and change his starting line up too often for them to be consistent, not to mention being over cautious with his tactics. Considering all this I think it's only natural to expect them to lose their way again. Or is it? What more can Liverpool do to convince me that they can win the league this season? They've beaten the champions Manchester United, the first time they've done so in the league under Benitez, and also ended Chelsea's near four year unbeaten run at home. They've won games while playing poorly and come from behind on a number of occassions to come away with a victory. And they've done this with Fernando Torres being either injured or off form for most of the season. On Sunday they made a further statement, destroying a Newcastle team who should consider themselves lucky only to have been beaten 5-1. So does all this mean Liverpool really can win the league? I have some serious doubts. They struggle to score goals at times and still can be too cautious as was the case when they shut up shop at Arsenal despite playing against ten men. Benitez continues to make some bizarre team selections such as dropping Robbie Keane against Newcastle after he had scored three goals in two games. They might have won 5-1 but Newcastle were so bad on Sunday that any team in the league would probably have hammered them. They've also dropped some silly points at home against teams such as Stoke and Hull to name two. But the fact is Liverpool are top of the league at the turn of the year, playing with confidence, and have earned the right to be considered genuine contenters for the title. I still don't think they'll win the league (and neither do the bookies who still make them third favourites) but they should come closer than they ever done before under Benitez.

BOXING DAY FIXTURES PART TWO - VILLA RATHER THAN CITY COULD BREAK THE TOP FOUR

The two Boxing Day games that interest me the most involve two teams who football tipsters suggested could break into the top four - Aston Villa and Manchester City. Villa face Arsenal at home and are probably the league's form team at the moment. They are unbeaten in their last six games, a run that started when they defeated Arsenal 2-0 away last month and also includes a draw with Man United. If they win on Friday the gap between Villa and Arsenal will be six points and Villa might not get a better chance to beat them. Arsenal will be without Cesc Fabregas who suffered an unfortunate long term injury in the draw against Liverpool and Emmanuel Adebayor will be suspended after being sent off in the same game. Villa are 13/8 for the win and I think I'll be backing them. Man City were the hottest story in the game when they were bought over earlier in the season and splashed the cash on Robinho. All of a sudden money was no object and the question being asked was when and not if City would be challenging for trophies. A few months later and things look a lot different. City are on a horrible run of form which has seen them drop into the bottom three and last weekend they were even beaten by West Brom who up to now have been the worst team in the league. On Boxing Day they are at home to Hull who made a strong start to the season but were beaten heavily by Sunderland in their last game. City simply have to win this game as if they can't beat Hull or West Brom you start to wonder who they can get points from. You can get 15/1 on City to be relegated and on current form it's tempting! Of course they''ll have the money to buy their way out of trouble in January but if they lose to Hull will Mark Hughes be there to spend it?

BOXING DAY FIXTURES PART ONE - STRAIGHTFORWARD FOR TITLE CHALLENGERS

Boxing Day should see Chelsea and Liverpool return to winning ways after their recent poor results. Chelsea are at home to West Brom. The Baggies might be confident following their win over Man City on Sunday but anybody could beat City at the moment and Chelsea will be far too strong and I expect them to win by a few goals (Chelsea are at 13/10 to win by more than two goals). Liverpool's home form has been shaky to say the least (they've drawn their last three games at home) but they won't keep dropping points at Anfield for too long. They will be pleased with their performance at Arsenal and the fact that they are still top of the league. Robbie Keane scored a wonder goal in that game and if he has found his form then they should have no problem beating Bolton. Man United go to Stoke and should come away with three points. My only worry would be that Stoke's high energy approach could expose any tiredness United are feeling after their trip to Japan. United will still come out on top though as they simply can't afford not to after seeing their rivals slip up so often in recent weeks.

UNITED WIN WITHOUT KICKING A BALL

I know it might seem like I'm repeating myself but it's not my fault that no one wants to win Premier League. Just as I predicted in my last blog both Chelsea and Liverpool dropped more points this weekend although I shouldn't be too critical as they both had tough games. Liverpool should really have beaten Arsenal as they were the better team until Arsenal had Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor sent off in the second half. For some reason Liverpool went into their shell after that and it was Arsenal who looked more likely to score. Even so, a draw at Arsenal is never too bad a result. Chelsea also did well to get a 0-0 draw at Everton considering they spent most of the match with ten men after John Terry was sent off. No doubt someone from Chelsea will probably be moaning about this decision in the near future but the referee got it right. I doubt Terry was trying to injure anybody but it was a dangerous tackle and could have done Leon Osman some serious damage. I'm not just having a go at Chelsea, it just gets annoying when managers and players are constantly whining about refereeing decisions. Anyway, i digress, that's for another blog I think! The big winners at the weekend were Manchester United and not just because they picked up the World Club Championship on Sunday. If they win their games in hand they will be just one point off the top. The fixture list is kindest to them in the second half of the season so maybe the bookies and football tipsters should now be making them favourites for the title instead of Chelsea.

UNITED COULD COME BACK FROM JAPAN WELL PLACED

Man United missed an opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders last weekend when they drew 0-0 at Spurs. They are away in Japan this week to play in the World Club Championship (a 5-3 win over Gamba Osaka today means they'll play in Sunday's final) meaning they won't play in the Premier League again until Boxing Day, by which time they could be nine points behind. This fact isn't lost on United and Paul Scholes made it quite clear that he would rather be back in England playing for Premier League points. But looking at this weekend's fixtures it could be a great weekend for United. Liverpool travel to Arsenal who have shown they have a talent to beat the best teams (Chelsea and Man United have lost to them already) despite the fact they have often been a shambles this season. Chelsea might not have dropped any points away from home but they haven't really been tested on the road either. On Monday night they go to Everton who have rarely given them an easy game in recent years. There continue to be rumours that some of the players are unhappy with Felipe Scolari's style of management and Everton might be just be the team to take advantage of any problems in the Chelsea dressing room. Having said that, Everton have only won one game at home this season so they will hardly start the game as favourites. Even so, there is a real chance both Chelsea and Liverpool will drop points this weeknd meaning United will come back with two games in hand and really fancying their chances of winning the league.

INCE HAD TO GO

Many football tipsters have been predicting Paul Ince wouldn't last the season as Blackburn manager and I wasn't surprised to see him get the sack. I would like to see more young English managers be successful but Ince seemed out of his depth from the beginning. There were rumours almost immediately that his style of management had alienated the players. Whether the rumours were true or not, I got the impression that Ince didn't like the scrutiny he was now under which was on completely different level to what he would have been used to before. His problems dealing with the media became even more apparent in recent weeks as he seemed to be convinced that it was them who were putting unnecessary pressure on him when the simple fact was he was under pressure because he wasn't winning any games. Some people within the game such as the League Managers Association and Ince's fellow managers have been critical of there even being a debate over Ince's future, let alone him being sacked but I can't see how Blackburn had a choice. They've won only three league games this season and are falling adrift at the bottom. Ince's body language and defeatist post match interviews gave no sign that he would be able to save them. If they had left it any longer then it was likely that any new manager wouldn't have enough time to keep them up and the financial consequences of relegation for Blackburn would be disastrous. Sam Allardyce has been appointed to replace Ince and, although I'm not a big fan of Allardyce, I think he is just the sort of character they need to galvanise the squad and keep them in the Premier League. If you disagree you can still get 13/8 on Blackburn to be relegated.

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES AT THE TOP

Could any football tipsters have predicted that all the Premier League's 'big four' would drop points this weekend? Probably not and what made it stranger was that they all kicked off at different times so each had the opportunity to gain a psychological advantage over their rivals by winning - and they all failed. First up were Arsenal who drew 1-1 at Middlesbrough. Let's face it, Arsenal aren't going to win the league this season anyway but Arsene Wenger will still believe they can and he'll know they needed to win that game to give themselves any chance. Next up were Liverpool who had dropped points in their last two home games and had not looked like convincing title challengers recently. And they didn't on Saturday either, having to come from 2-0 down at home to Hull to settle for a 2-2 draw. While I'm on the subject of Liverpool, can anyone explain why Rafa Benitez would choose to leave his £20 million summer signing, striker Robbie Keane, sitting on the bench when they were desperately chasing a goal? Me neither but it goes to show why Liverpool won't win the league with him as manager. Manchester United could only draw 0-0 at Spurs in the Saturday evening game. The result was especially bad for United considering that they don't have another league game until December 26 and they had already missed a chance to narrow the gap a few weeks ago when they drew 0-0 at Aston Villa. The lack of goals is very concerning from their point of view and Dimitar Berbatov has yet to prove his worth. Finally today Chelsea blew the chance to go top by drawing 1-1 at home to West Ham. Their home record has been pretty poor so far this season and while they have won all their away games it's worth remembering that they still have to go to United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Aston Villa and Everton (next Monday) so they can't afford to be dropping silly points at home. The one thing this weekend has proved is that their are still a lot of twists to come in the title race.

Barcelona v Real Madrid - El Clasico

There's no game I look forward to more each season than Barcelona v Real Madrid so I can't wait for Saturday night's match. I've been lucky enough to have been to the Nou Camp for this fixture and see the hostility first hand and it's intense. And in the last few year's the two rivals have been fighting it out for the La Liga title which has made the games even more special. Last year Leo Messi stole the show with an unbelievable hat trick to help Barca to a 3-3 draw. But towards the end of last season Barca were humiliated in Madrid 4-1 and Real ended up running away with the title. Barca will have revenge on their mind and are in just the sort of form to get it. They are scoring goals for fun and even with Samuel Eto'o injured last week they romped to a 4-0 win over a decent Valencia team with Thierry Henry scoring a hat trick. On the other hand Real have been a complete shambles recently and lost 4-3 at home to Sevilla last weekend. After those results a home win for Barca was probably the safest bet imaginable. Since those games though Real have sacked manager Bernd Schuster and brought in Juande Ramos who despite failing at Spurs had achieved a lot in Spain. A new manager usually galvanises a team and he should at least bring some organisation to the club. If you fancy him to have the magic touch then Madrid are good value to win the game at 5/1. I can't see anything other than a home win though. I'll also be taking a scorecast bet with Paddy Power as they are offering one of their money back specials for this game - if Messi scores the final goal then they will refund all first/last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast bets.

Glad to see the back of the group stages

I mentioned in my last blog that I wasn't excited about Tuesday's Champions League games and it was hard to get excited about Wednesday's too. The group stages as a whole were pretty dull and predictable and it was no surprise that in the last round of group games the majority of qualification places were already decided and the only issues to resolve were who would come top of the group.This wasn't even incentive enough for Manchester United and Inter Milan (to name but two) who both played weakened teams and failed to win. If UEFA insist on a group stage in this competition it would be more entertaining if it were at the last 16 stage when the teams in each group would be more closely matched and there would be fewer meaningless or one sided matches. And you might actually get a better idea of who is best equipped to win the tournament. Of course this will never happen as it would cost too many teams too much money. The good news is that the group stage is out of the way and I can't wait for Friday's draw. At least there should now be some interesting games to look forward to.

League the priority for Liverpool and Inter

It's hard to get too excited about Tuesday's Champions League games as most of the qualifiers are already decided. The major exception is Chelsea but it would take a freakish set of results for them not to qualify. They only have to beat Romanian side CFR Cluj at home to make the knockout stages and if they can't do that then they simply don't deserve to qualify, let alone be in with a chance of winning the tournament. And even if the unthinkable does happen it would take a surprise victory for Bordeaux at Roma to send them out. Roma would go out if they lose and Chelsea win so there is no chance of them taking it easy. Athletico Madrid and Liverpool are both through but still battling it out to see who will top the group and both face tricky away games. Rafa Benitez will be keen on Liverpool finishing top of the group but he likes to keep his players rotated and will no doubt be keeping one eye on the league. With that in mind, PSV at 6/4 to win may be a decent bet. Along the same lines, Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho has indicated he will probably rest some players for their game at Werder Bremen as he seem unconvinced that finishing top will give them an easier opponent in the next round. Bremen have been poor this campaign but will never have a better chance to beat Inter so could be worth a go at 13/8. This game will be available in-running so I'll be waiting until kick-off before making my decision on this one.

Expect the unexpected with Spurs

It's a London derby tonight with West Ham hosting Spurs and it should be an interesting game. If you look at the two sides form since Harry Redknapp took over as Spurs manager at the end of October then you would say it's an obvious away win. But last weekend they lost their first game under him at home to Everton and it will be interesting to see how he gets them to respond to that setback. West Ham's form over the last couple of months had been pretty dire but their most recent results have shown big signs of improvement. They followed up their win at Sunderland with a stubborn 0-0 draw at Liverpool last week and with three consecutive clean sheets they look increasingly difficult to beat. When Spurs are involved anything can and usually does happen making predicting the outcome difficult. The win/draw/win odds reflect this so betting on any one of those outcomes will give you good value if you're willing to take the risk. Given the unpredictability of Spurs I think I will punt on this bet available with Paddy Power - 17/2 on Spurs to be winning at half time but failing to win the game.

Avoid the 'big four' this weekend!

The football betting advice on this weekend's Premier League games is to avoid the top four. The odds being offered by the bookies suggest they think it will be a straightforward weekend for them. An accumulator on all four to win returns less than 4/1 but the games might not be as easy as the bookies think. Manchester United (1/6 to win) should breeze past managerless Sunderland at Old Trafford but the other three won't have it that easy. Arsenal (4/11) are at home to Wigan who have won their last two games but ought not to cause the Gunners too many problems. Then again, you would have thought the same about Hull, Fulham and Stoke but they have all beaten Arsenal this season. Chelsea have a 100% away record this season but go to a Bolton side that has found it's best form of late so the odds of 8/15 on Chelsea to win are not tempting in the least. And finally, Liverpool go to Blackburn on the back of two 0-0 draws and without star striker Fernando Torres. Blackburn are pretty woeful at the moment but odds of 8/11 on the league leaders still aren't worth risking. So this weekend I think I'll look at the other games this week with Man City to win at Fulham (13/8) and Portsmouth to win at West Brom (also 13/8) as my tips.

Keano too quick to quit

Many football tipsters felt it was just a matter of time before Roy Keane resigned as Sunderland manager but personally I'm surprised and disappointed to see Keane quit. Surprised because, as bad as their current form has been they have not been cut adrift at the bottom and they have some very winnable games coming up after they play Manchester United this weekend (their following three games are West Brom and Blackburn at home with a trip to Hull in between). Yes, Sunderland have only won one of their last six league games and were dreadful against Bolton at the weekend but they are by no means dead and buried and had Keane stuck it out until the new year things could and probably would have looked a whole lot different. And this is the reason I'm disappointed by his decision. He took over the club when they were struggling in the Championship, got them promoted in his first season, and then kept them in the Premier League the following year. He has spent a lot of money in his time at the club yet at the first sign of trouble he has decided to throw in the towel. Keane was many people's tip to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United but I don't see why United, or any club for that matter, would be willing to take a chance on a manager who quits when times get tough. The bookies don't necessarily agree though and you can get around 9/1 on Keane's next managerial job being at Old Trafford.

Recent results keeping title race interesting

The battle to win the Premier League looks like it could be interesting this year following recent results. Liverpool haven't looked like championship challengers in their last two games having failed to beat or even score against Fulham and West Ham at home. Dropping points in games like those just gives ammunition to those people (such as me) who don't think Liverpool have a serious chance of winning the league this season. They might be sitting one point clear at the top of the table just now but even the bookies aren't convinced, making them third favourites at around 10/3. I tipped Chelsea at the beginning of the season and I stand by that although I'm less confident after their latest results. They have failed to beat Newcastle and been beaten by Arsenal in their last to two home games and have seen a pretty formidable gap between them and Manchester United dwindle. Even so the bookies still consider them favourites. United are still six points behind Chelsea, seven to Liverpool but they have a game in hand and would have been even closer if they'd won at Villa last weekend. United still look to me as though they haven't hit top form and, considering the other three top sides still have to go to Old Trafford, they all of a sudden look worth a punt at odds of 15/8. As for Arsenal, when they lost at home to Aston Villa a few weeks ago I realised I wasn't that surprised as I no longer considered them capable of winning the league. Most football tipsters would agree with me but if you don't, and Arsenal are only eight points off the top after all, then you should really put your money where your mouth is as you can now get 16/1 on them to win the league.

Performance to now has been not impressive, and with unfamiliar challengers, surprising football tipsters and punters alike, in Hull, Bolton, Fulham and Wigan snapping at Arsenal's heels, you have to wonder what exactly is happening to the Premier League this season. Manchester derby could go either way

Not many football tipsters would have predicted the events of last weekend in the Premier League with none of the top four winning or even scoring a goal and this Sunday's Manchester derby might be just as difficult to call. Man United travel to local rivals Man City having failed to score in their last two football matches against Aston Villa and Villareal. Taking into consideration that City beat United home and away last season, and that City come into the game buzzing having just thrashed Arsenal 3-0, the odds of 10/11 on United aren't very tempting and I'll be steering clear. Football tipsters will see a more interesting bet could be on either of the form players, City's Robinho at 12/5 or United's Ronaldo at 11/8 to score at any time during the game. It's Robinho's first Manchester derby and he'll be eager to impress so I think that's where I'll put my money.

Victory for Chelsea on Sunday by no means guaranteed

It's not been a great week for Arsenal. William Gallas has made headlines for all the wrong reasons and been stripped of the captaincy. They then suffered a pretty emphatic 3-0 defeat at Manchester City last weekend. So the obvious football betting advice on Sunday's game would seem to be a home win for Chelsea. But whatever criticisms that are aimed at Arsenal you can't deny that they seem to produce their best peformances in the big games just as they did a few weeks ago against Manchester United. And Chelsea don't come into the game in the best of form having been held to a draw by Newcastle at Stamford Bridge last weekend and failing to beat Bordeaux in the Champions League on Wednesday. Not to mention that their frightening home record is all of a sudden not so scary after all. They've actually dropped points in more than half of their home games so far this season including being beaten by Liverpool. Football tipsters will have taken into account the odds of 8/11 on Chelsea to win are very poor value. I fancy the draw at 5/2 but I'll probably take a punt on their being over two goals at evens as I'm hoping for an entertaining game.

Big night ahead for Pompey

Portsmouth against AC Milan? Ronaldinho at Fratton Park? As a neutral I'm still struggling to get my head around this so I can't imagine what it must be like for the Pompey fans who have watched their club progress so far in such a short space of time. Not even the best Football tipsters could have seen this coming. Portsmouth can be quite strong at home and you have to think the Milan players won't fancy a winter night on the South Coast too much. There are also a lot of experienced players at the club such as Sol Campbell, Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe who won't be fazed by the occassion. Even so, Pompey haven't been especially convincing since Tony Adams took over so I still expect Milan to be too strong and at 5/4 it's too good to resist. My biggest concern is that Milan probably consider the league to be their priority so they might not play their best side. With that in mind, I'll be making my final decision after I see the team line ups. Don't forget you'll be able to bet in-running too as this game will be on TV so you can always wait and see if Milan are really up for it before placing a bet.

Still work to do for Chelsea

The English Premier League teams are expected to go far in the Champions League again this year and with one round of group matches still remaining they can already relax and look forward to the knockout stages. Expect that is for Chelsea, the team most football tipsters and bookies considered favourites for the trophy at the start of the season. They could only draw in Bordeaux tonight and while they should still beat CFR Cluj at home in their match to qualify, it might only be good enough for second place which could mean a very tricky draw in the next round. Liverpool and Manchester are both through already but neither could beat the Spanish opposition in their group at home or away (Villareal and Atletico Madrid respectively). Arsenal were impressive against Porto at home and Fenerbache away but the fact is they had a very easy group so you can't read much into those performances. The English teams dominated the competition last season but the early signs are that they will have a tougher time of it this year and some of the bookies now believe Barcelona to be favourites.

End of the road for Gallas?

It's safe to say that William Gallas wasn't the greatest captain Arsenal have ever had. I was never really convinced he was cut out for the job and his hissy fit after the game at Birmingham last season proved it. Arsene Wenger has finally seen sense and taken the captaincy from him but only after Gallas broke one of the game's unwritten rules and publicly criticised his team-mates. Wenger says he will pick him for this week's Champions League game against Dynamo Kiev but personally I don't see how he can remain at the club. Can you imagine having to go and face those same players you've slagged off when you've just been so obviously undermined by your manager? I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that dressing room tomorrow night!

Celtic away in the Champions League? That'll be a home win then

It pains me to say this as I'd like to see Celtic qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League but given their appalling away record I'm not very confident and odds of 2/1 for Aalborg to beat them on Tuesday night could be too good to miss. Aalborg aren't a great side but they held Villareal to a draw in Denmark while Celtic have lost sixteen of their seventeen previous away matches in the competition and only managed a draw against them at home.
